The tool applies the Medicare card number rules published for Australian healthcare software. It checks that the number contains 10 digits, starts with a digit from 2 to 6, and has the expected ninth check digit.
The first eight digits identify the card record, the ninth digit is the check digit, and the tenth digit is the issue number. The IRN beside a person's name is separate and is not part of this validation.
What This Validator Cannot Check
A correctly formatted number may still relate to an expired, replaced or inactive card. Only Services Australia, or authorised healthcare systems using official eligibility services, can confirm current status.

The IRN is the digit printed beside an individual's name on the card. It is separate from the 10-digit Medicare card number and is not checked by this tool.
The first eight digits are multiplied by the weights 1, 3, 7, 9, 1, 3, 7 and 9. The sum modulo 10 must equal the ninth digit. The tenth digit is the card issue number.
